Why choose cloth diapers over disposable diapers?

When it comes to choosing between cloth diapers and disposable diapers, there are several factors to consider. While disposable diapers may seem convenient, they have a significant impact on the environment as the third largest product in landfills — one that can take up to 500 years to decompose. That's a staggering amount considering that it takes hundreds of years for a disposable diaper to decompose.

Cloth diapers, on the other hand, can be reused multiple times, last from ages 0-2, and can even be re-sold when your child has outgrown the use of diapers — making them a much more eco-friendly choice. By opting for cloth diapers, you can significantly reduce your household waste and bills while contributing to a healthier planet for your family's future.

Cloth Diapering Myths

Before diving into the various types of cloth diapers, it's important to address some common misconceptions surrounding cloth diapering. One myth is that cloth diapers are bulky and uncomfortable for babies. However, modern cloth diapers have come a long way in terms of design and functionality. Many cloth diapers are now trim-fitting and offer adjustable sizing to ensure a comfortable fit for your little one. Some people also say that washing cloth diapers uses just as many resources as disposable diapers but Esembly Baby Diapers‘ founder, Liz Turrigiano, has actually tested the energy and water usage for washing cloth diapers and says it's equivalent to running the dishwasher. Besides — most of the diapers can go in the wash with the rest of your baby's clothes.

Another myth is that cloth diapers are difficult to use and require a lot of extra work. While it's true that cloth diapers require more effort than disposables, they are not as daunting as they may seem. With proper preparation and a good routine, cloth diapering can be a seamless part of your baby care routine. One of the biggest myths? That it's all or nothing. Cloth diapering can be done just at home, just overnight, just once a day, or used all the time — it's up to you! Even just using a cloth/reusable diaper instead of a disposable swim diaper will make a huge impact on the planet and your wallet.

Choosing a cloth diaper

Selecting your cloth diapers may take some time and research. There are many styles to choose from, but try a few different styles that seem appealing to you and then invest in an entire “stash.” Opt for organic cloth diaper inserts (Amazon affiliate) for the material against your baby's skin. A great way to try different styles is to find a local cloth diapering group and purchase diapers second-hand. You can easily do a deep cleaning and sun-dry if you are concerned about using something that's been used already. Facebook cloth diaper buy-and-sell groups are popular options for buying, selling, and trading cloth diapers.

Wet bags or pail liner

A container to store the dirty diapers until it’s time for diaper laundry is a must. Some people prefer a trash can or plastic hamper with a pail liner inside, but you may choose to use a wet bag at home or when you go out. Whether you choose a large wet bag or a pail liner, they should have a PUL (a laminated fabric that makes diapers waterproof) layer to prevent leaks.

Cloth-diaper-safe detergent

Don’t use just any detergent to wash your cloth diapers. If you have invested in good diapers, don’t skimp on the detergent! Make sure you purchase a detergent that is cloth diaper-safe to avoid buildup and stinks. Regular detergents contain fabric softeners, whiteners, fragrances, and bleach. These detergent ingredients will cause build-up on the diapers and will lead to repelling, leaks, and stinky diapers. Washing every other day, putting them up on the line to dry (in the sun when possible to get rid of stains and any bacteria), and then placing them in the dryer for a few minutes on low heat to fluff them up before putting them in drawers is a great option.

Cloth-diaper-safe creams and liners

Same as the detergent, make sure you get a bottom cream suitable to use with cloth diapers. Traditional creams will adhere to the inner fabric of the diapers and may clog the fibers of the fabric, leaving behind a residue layer even after washing. Try something like Noleo 3-in-1 Organic Diaper Cream or Motherlove Diaper Balm (I LOVE their natural products and code NP15 saves you 15% off!). If you have to use a regular diaper rash ointment for an extreme situation, use a thick liner to avoid the ointment getting on the diaper. If you get some on your diaper accidentally, use a degreasing detergent and scrub, scrub, scrub, then rinse, rinse, rinse.

Cloth wipes

Cloth wipes are a practical and cost-effective way to go, especially if you are already doing diaper laundry! Cut up receiving blankets, washcloths, and cotton velour wipes. They all do the same job, but some parents prefer certain fabrics over others. The size of the wipes can also be a deciding factor when choosing your fabric. You can carry moist wipes in your diaper bag or carry dry wipes along with a small spray bottle and spray/wipe as needed.

Diaper sprayer

Some people consider a diaper sprayer (Amazon affiliate) a luxury until they find themselves trying to dump a big mess in the toilet. Many cloth diapering companies manufacture their own sprayers and some hardware stores sell “kits” intended to install them in the bathroom. A long shower hose can work as well. Some cloth diapering experts prefer to dump the excess BM in the toilet and then use a laundry room sink as a prewash before a separate laundry cycle. You'll find your own rhythm.

7 Essential Nursery Room Do’s & Don’ts

Setting up a nursery room can be an exciting yet overwhelming task for new parents. With so many options and opinions out there, it's important to know the essential nursery room do's and don'ts to create a safe and comforting space for your little one — things that aren't usually shared. Creating a nursery room that is practical, functional, and aesthetically pleasing is the key to ensuring your baby's comfort and well-being. By following these do's and don'ts, you will be able to create a nurturing environment that promotes good sleep, healthy development, and happy moments with your little bundle of joy.

Get ready to transform your nursery room — or space within your own room, wherever your little one may sleep — into a haven for your baby with our essential tips and advice. Let's dive in!

This post was originally published on 7/11/2016. Not everyone has the space to make a dedicated nursery room, so this post is also about nursery areas, wherever that might be in your home.

Do paint ahead of time

No one wants to be inhaling paint while trying to soothe an upset newborn, so it's important to not only paint the room ahead of time but use zero-VOC paint with calming colors. Most paints off-gas even years after painting but paints free of volatile organic compounds won't. In fact, they even smell better while painting! Be sure the paint is really zero-VOC, though, because some paints claim zero-VOC, but that's before adding the pigment for the color. I ordered all of my zero-VOC paint from Paints. Local eco-friendly home stores also offer zero-VOC paints.

Don't put loose items above the crib

Decorating a nursery room with loose items above the crib is a common mistake in a lot of the pretty nursery pictures I've seen online. Not only will your kiddo try to grab the objects above them, but if there's ever an earthquake, all those sharp cutesy decorations on the geometric wooden shelf are going to fall on him. Opt for decorating the wall with fun painted patterns, and decals, or with flat well-mounted letters instead. Think about other ways you may need to baby-proof the room (and your whole house) in a way that keeps your little one safe without making the whole house a “No” space that's sectioned off.

Do hold off on the crib

Most people use bassinets or cribs so I thought I'd use both with my kids too. I never used them… well, except to hold my clean laundry. The U.S. media tends to focus on buying a crib and putting it together in a nursery “for the baby” but you might not use that crib for at least a month (if ever). Most bassinets last the first few months and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies room share with their caregivers for the first year. I ended up co-sleeping with my kiddos — the first because of reflux (and we didn't have a separate room for her) and the rest of the babies as a matter of choice since I also breastfed them. Their rooms have been used as a space for toys, clothes, diaper changes, and future beds. Save your money and buy a sidecar sort of arrangement that can turn into a crib later, or just wait on the crib until you know for sure your baby will sleep in one. Not everything needs to be bought at once and before your baby is home.

Don't wash all the clothes yet

You'll also want to wait on washing all the baby clothes you have ahead of time so you can return the ones you end up not using for store credit. Wash about four Newborn and six 0-6 months outfits then leave the rest with tags intact. Babies typically outgrow or skip a size fairly quickly so it's best to wait and see whether or not you'll need more of a certain size before taking the tags off. Babies also get all kinds of things on their outfits — You know, like poop — so you'll probably end up washing an outfit then grabbing it from the clean clothes hamper for baby to wear again more often than reaching for a new outfit from the closet. Keep in mind the weather, too. You might have several long-sleeve onesies in sizes 3-6 months and it will be extremely warm weather by the time your baby fits in them. You'll want to return or regift those.

Tip: Organize your baby's clothes by size (with tags on) so that you can see what you have in each of the sizes. Using clothing dividers makes this a lot easier — Check out our free printable for some mountain-themed baby clothing organizers. here!

Do incorporate sensory elements

Creating a stimulating and engaging environment is important for your baby's development. Incorporating sensory elements into the room can help promote their cognitive and physical development. Consider adding a mirror on the wall in their room to provide visual stimulation — something like a toddler-height Montessori mirror is great for tummy time and learning facial expressions with parents. Soft toys and textured teethers provide tactile stimulation, while music and white noise machines can provide auditory stimulation.

You can also decorate the room with removable art that is high contrast for the early months and then slowly more colorful later on — visually interesting items that are also useful such as nursery room area rugs and curtains are great visual tools, too. You could also use an essential oils diffuser to provide a calming and relaxing scent.

Don't waste your money on a changing table

I bought a dedicated changing table for my oldest daughter when she was a baby that I thought would be perfect as a dresser or something for her later as she got older . . . but it had a permanent changing portion attached so it just didn't work out the way I thought it would. Choosing to use a sturdy removable changing station that you can rest on top of a long dresser is best for saving space and money. Honestly, I did a bulk of the diaper changes on my lap out at a restaurant (no changing table in the bathroom), in her stroller while out, or on the floor. You're not going to want to turn your back on the kiddo while changing her diaper anyway, so this slimmer option is safe and so much more versatile.

Do stick to essentials

Keep the nursery room simple — Items baby needs and items you need for feeding/changing baby. This means no extra gadgets and especially no computers or TVs if you can help it (our electronics emit a bit of radiation that newborns just don't need). Be sure to have a soothing music player/toy, a chair for feeding or rocking, and enough space for all the diapers and clothes. The layout of the baby's space should be open enough for you to easily move in and out of the space — a functional and organized layout.

When to give your newborn their first bath

Research finds that waiting at least 24 hours after birth before giving a newborn their first bath may reduce infant mortality and hypothermia. Delaying the first bath also allows babies to adjust to their new surroundings and preserve as much vernix —a waxy substance that coats the baby's skin and offers natural moisturization and antibacterial properties.— as possible. Some parents will delay the first bath for a minimum of a week if not 4-6 weeks. However, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider or pediatrician for specific recommendations based on your baby's individual needs.

With my own kids, I typically do a light sponge bath with washcloths to get any stinky gunk off hands or under chins at around 2 weeks old (if needed), then do a full bath closer to 6 weeks old. By six weeks they're plumped up from feeding and have a bit of time to adjust to new surroundings. If your baby has feeding difficulties, a poor latch (milk neck, anyone?), multiple blowouts, or extra stinky poos from formula feeding then you might choose to bathe your newborn sooner than 6 weeks old. Outside of special medical circumstances, the timing of the first newborn bath is ultimately up to the family.

Disclaimer: No matter when or how you bathe your newborn baby it is extremely important that you schedule it for a time when you are alert, free of distractions, and attentive with your hands on your baby at all times — a newborn baby can easily drown in just 2 inches of water. Being alert means that you are not sleepy or on any medications or recreational drugs that might impair your judgment or alertness.

How to prepare for your newborn baby's first bath

You might need more than you'd think for baby's first big bath and you're going to want it all within reach so that your hands are always on your newborn baby when they are being bathed. You'll want to have another adult to help you with the bath —if possible — to make this first newborn bath run a lot smoother, but it can be done solo as well with the right amount of prep work. Be sure the area you're using will work for the bathing method you've chosen and is clean and safe before setting up for your newborn baby's first bath.

Ways to bathe your newborn for the first time

There are a few different ways to bathe your newborn baby but what you choose for your family will likely depend on whether or not you had a cesarean birth, if you have a bathtub in your home, the size of the sinks in your home, and the best location for a bath with warm water.

Bathing with your newborn baby

Skin-to-skin contact during bath time can be a beautiful way to bond with your newborn while easing any anxiety you might have about a first bath. Newborns are often calmer when on top of their parents and laying on top of one of their parents for their first bath — which means less crying and stress for everyone. Bonus: Newborn moms can use this bathtime opportunity to enjoy a sitz bath or coconut milk bath for themselves. Enjoy the closeness and connection that this shared experience brings!

Contraindications: If you had a c-section birth medical approval is required before attempting to get in and out of your bathtub for this newborn bathing method. Also, avoid bathing your newborn baby (or any age baby/child) if you are sleepy or taking any medication or recreational drugs that might limit your alertness.

How To:

  1. Fill the tub with warm water (around 100°F or 38°C, more on that later) and carefully lower yourself into the water. You can also add sitz bath (an herbal tea created to aid in postpartum healing) or coconut milk to this water!
  2. Leave the water running on a low setting at a comfortable warm temperature for you to use with the washcloths for bathing baby (more on how to do this later).
  3. If you have a second adult present, have them hand you your newborn baby after you're already settled in the water. Ensure that both you and your baby are comfortable and supported. (This may mean adding a bath pillow for yourself before you even get in).
  4. During this bonding bath time, your baby can breastfeed/body feed as you use washcloths to gently wash them (one for soap and another for clean water rinsing) or can lay belly-to-belly asleep on you, or even be held cradled in your arms! No matter how you choose to hold your baby while in the bath with you, just be sure to support your newborn baby's head and ensure an open airway.

Bathing your newborn baby in the sink

If you recently had a cesarean birth and received a soft baby tub meant for the sink as a baby shower gift, you might opt to bathe your newborn baby in a bathroom sink or kitchen sink. A sink bath uses less water than a whole bathtub and allows for a quicker bath experience.

How To:

  1. Ensure that the sink is thoroughly cleaned before using it as a baby bath and that the baby tub you have will fit in the sink.
  2. Fill the sink with warm water at a safe temperature (again, around 100°F or 38°C) and place a soft towel or a non-slip mat at the bottom for added comfort and stability.
  3. Gently cradle your baby in your arms or use a supporting bath seat designed for sinks, while using your other hand to wash them gently (more on that later).

Contraindications: If you don't have the proper sink tub or sink size for an infant tub, this is not the best option for bathing a baby. You also are more likely to need everything right next to you or a second adult to ensure you don't turn your back on your baby. Avoid bathing your newborn baby (or any age baby/child) if you are sleepy or taking any medication or recreational drugs that might limit your alertness.

Little Bathtubs

There are various small-sized bathtubs available specifically designed for newborns. These tubs provide a comfortable and safe space for your baby's bath time. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for filling the tub with warm water and ensure that it is stable and secure. Support your baby's head and neck throughout the bath, and use a gentle touch while cleansing their delicate skin.

brushing baby cradle cap

How to wash your newborn in the bath

Similar to a bed bath, there's a certain way to wash a newborn baby during their first bath.

  1. Start the bath and fill it with a few inches of warm water. Keeping the water temperature at an optimal level is crucial for your baby's comfort and safety. The recommended water temperature for a baby's bath is around 100°F (38°C). It's important to check the water temperature using a reliable thermometer or the inside of your wrist before placing your baby in the water. Remember to always keep a hand on your baby and never leave them unattended during bath time, regardless of the method you choose.
  2. Warm a washcloth and use one corner to wipe your newborn's left eye from the bridge of their nose to their ears.
  3. Use a different corner of the washcloth to gently do the same on their right eye.
  4. You can then either fold the washcloth over and add a pea-sized amount of soap to the center or add soap to a new washcloth.
  5. Wash under your newborn's neck, in thier armpits, down their arms then to their belly and legs with feet and genitals last.
  6. Wet another washcloth with warm water (this is when washcloths with different patterns on them is helpful) and use it to wipe baby's face and then the rest of the body.
  7. The last part of the body that you will wash using a bit of soap and a washcloth is your newborn's head. Babies can lose warmth through their heads, so it's best to wash the hair last. If they are experiencing cradle cap you may apply a cradle cap soap or ointment at the start of the bath then wash it off with water and a cradle cap brush at the end.
  8. Remember to always keep a hand on your baby and not turn away from them. Have another adult hold a hooded towel up so that you can hand them your baby after the bath, or have the towel next to your baby so you can pick up your baby and then place the towel around them.
  9. While drying off is a great time to soothe a fussy baby with breastfeeding/body feeding or bottle feeding and infant massage (more on that later). Use unscented lotion or safflower oil for infant massage with a newborn so that they can pick up your scent.
  10. You may also want to cut or file your baby's nails when they are calmed down before getting them dressed.
  11. Dress your baby in their diapers and clothes. Congrats on your first bath!
cutting baby's nails

Soothing your baby after their first bath

Chances are high that your baby will need comfort after their bath, whether or not he likes baths. Sit in your glider or rocking chair with your newborn wrapped up in his soft towel and breastfeed/ body feed or offer a hug. Gentle touch has been shown to have numerous benefits for babies, including promoting bonding, soothing, and improving sleep. Babies have a sense of touch as early as 8 weeks gestation, making massage a wonderful tool for connection. To learn more about infant massage techniques, grab my free guide to infant massage for better sleep! If your baby's content, start to gently file or trim any extra-long nails, too.

Easter is a time for celebration and fun, but it doesn't have to come at the expense of the environment or your child's health. Instead of filling your baby or toddler's Easter basket with plastic toys and sugary treats, consider these sustainable and junk-free alternatives that are both eco-friendly and enjoyable.

Re-think the basket

When putting together your eco-conscious Easter basket, consider using reusable and sustainable packaging. Instead of using plastic baskets or bags, opt for a reusable cloth bag or natural weave basket made from sustainable materials. You can also use a cute straw purse, like this one from Maisonette so that the Easter “basket” itself is part of the gift and offers multiple functions.

Choose open-ended toys

When selecting toys for your child's Easter basket, opt for open-ended, eco-friendly, and non-toxic options. Look for toys made from sustainable materials that encourage creativity and imagination, like Sarah's Silks. From teethers to wands, capes, and crowns to swords and decoration, Sarah's Silks offers beautiful multi-use play silks that are sure to encourage creative play for years to come. The Easter collection also includes DIY kits for dying your own play silks — a fun activity to do as a family for silks to cherish always.

Add social-emotional books

Consider including age-appropriate books in this year's Easter basket. Not only is this a physical gift, but it's a gift of time together as a family reading which boosts language development! Both babies, tots, and preschoolers alike enjoy learning about emotions as they navigate how they're feeling, so my Easter book recommendation is the book Rainbow of Emotions.

Boost well-being

Another great Easter basket gift that is both a physical gift and includes an activity is the gift of something like Loloma Fiji Organic Virgin Coconut Oil. Not only does the packaging of Loloma (a gold ball) make for a fun rolling ball, but this gift encourages the daily act of self-care and allows parents to model this through infant massage after bathtime (another bonding activity).

Peter Rabbit Bodysuit & Ribbed Leggings Outfit on toddler

Include Easter duds

In my family, it's tradition to get your special Easter outfit in your Easter basket. Opt for something special that can be passed down to another sibling or given to a friend to make it sustainable! This could be shoes, an outfit, or accessories. MORI's adorable Peter Rabbit Collection and PediPed shoes are the perfect pair for the baby and tot in your life's Easter outfit. I mean, how cute is this?!

1. Clean the air

If safe to do so (no one is smoking outside and there isn't construction or heavy freeway traffic nearby), open your windows daily to allow fresh air into the bedroom. Studies have shown that indoor air is actually more toxic than the air outside and that things take longer to break down indoors, meaning harmful toxins linger longer. Add an air purifier like Air Doctor to the baby's nursery room and other rooms in your home to reduce allergens, bacteria, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds). The addition of safe air-purifying plants is also really beneficial for further detoxifying the air in your home.

2. Take off your shoes

According to the EPA, studies have shown that taking off your shoes reduces the amount of lead dust in your home by 60 percent! Not only that but think of all the herbicides and everything else on our shoes. People often think that if they don't see mud or dirt on the bottom of a shoe then their shoe must be clean, but one study found that the outside of a shoe carries an average of 421,000 units of bacteria — bleh! Be safe and start a new home policy of taking your shoes off outside or at the front door to create a safer, greener home.

3. Sunbathe items

Like shoes, things like furniture, toys, bouncers, and swings can introduce some new hazards to the home — whether second-hand or new. Have the items spend some time outside in direct sunlight to off-gas. What's off-gassing? It's that smell when you remove the plastic wrap from a new product and it's full of dangerous toxins you don’t want your baby to breathe in. New items from your baby registry can give off this odor for a few days before toning down.

Second-hand items may also have bacteria or other toxins from their previous home that you'll want to kill off in the sun and with a pet-safe and baby-safe cleaner like Force of Nature. Unlike most cleaners, Force of Nature can be used to clean virtually anything in your home and can also be used to sanitize or disinfect items safely without having to worry about dangerous chemicals! Depending on the severity of the dirt or grime on the used nursery room toys or furniture, you may need to clean the items with Force of Nature first before disinfecting the items by spraying Force of Nature again and letting its' Hypochlorous Acid and Sodium Hydroxide solution sit for 10 minutes before wiping your items clean. Even if your nursery room items are brand new, cleaning them with Force of Nature will help remove any excess wood pulp, allergens, and potential mold spores that may be on the items from handling, storage, and shipment. This is a crucial cleaning step that a lot of people skip because they think new is the same as clean when in reality new store items can have all kinds of gross stuff on them. Think about it — you wash your clothes before wearing them and need to sanitize any baby bottles before using them, right? The same goes for all of the baby gear! Use Force of Nature in the rest of your home to keep the whole house safe, too.

4. Switch to organic bedding

When it comes to creating an eco-friendly nursery, choosing organic and natural mattresses & bedding is a must. Traditional mattresses & bedding can be made with harmful chemicals and synthetic materials that can off-gas and contribute to poor indoor air quality. Look for bedding made from organic cotton, coconut, bamboo, or other natural materials that are free from harmful chemicals and dyes. Not only is this better for the environment, but it's also better for your baby's health and well-being.

Some brand-new organic and natural mattress & bedding options are just as affordable as traditional, but if you find a great deal on options via second-hand sales, that can also help bring down costs. Watch for the sale of these more natural brands on marketplaces and in natural parenting groups. You could also opt to buy an organic topper to create a barrier rather than buying a whole new mattress for your bed and baby's crib (if you use one) — it’s less expensive and a great way to reduce the toxins they breathe while sleeping.

Need help finding eco-friendly baby items for your registry? Our friends at BabyList have a few products picked out for you, here.

5. Be picky

Be picky when selecting clothing, toys, furniture, or any materials for your baby's nursery, opt for non-toxic and sustainable options. Look for products made from organic cotton, natural woods, or other sustainable materials that are verified organic or at least OKEO-TEX. Avoid products made with harmful chemicals like formaldehyde, phthalates, and flame retardants. Check the label of your baby's pajamas and look for a tag that says, “For child’s safety, garment should fit snugly” It’s likely that these PJs haven’t been sprayed with flame retardants. This includes items like paint! Make sure furniture is made with VOC-free paint and only use VOC-free paint, like Ecos, when painting the nursery and other rooms in your home while prepping for your baby's birth (look for VOC-free in the base and color of the paint).

This can be deceiving on shopping websites like Amazon where a product might look natural but have an unsafe paint or other materials in it, so opt for well-known sellers/brands when shopping (the extra cost now is well worth it for better health and less medical appointments in the future). You can also repurpose items you already have or shop secondhand to reduce waste and save money.

6. Consider cloth diapering

Disposable diapers are a major contributor to landfill waste, taking hundreds of years to decompose. Switching to reusable cloth diapers can significantly reduce your environmental impact and save you money in the long run. While the upfront cost may be higher, cloth diapers can be reused for multiple children or sold to another family when you no longer need them! Using cloth diapers even part of the time can save you thousands of dollars over the course of your child's diaper-wearing years. You don't have to use cloth diapers all of the time, so don't let that stop you from trying. Opt for eco-friendly cloth diapers made from organic cotton (Amazon affiliate) or bamboo (after all, these items are against your baby's most sensitive skin & parts so you want to avoid chemicals and microplastics here).

7. Re-think your clean routine

According to the EWG, studies have shown that many of these harmful substances end up in dust and break down at a slower rate indoors. It’s best to dust often and clean up these substances with a microfiber cloth and a safe cleaner like Force of Nature. A HEPA vacuum is most efficient at removing dust particles and other contaminants that settle on your floor. Consider steam cleaning tile at least once a month then having a non-toxic cleaning company help with steaming carpets and rugs at least once a year.

Use energy-efficient lighting

Lighting is an important aspect of any nursery, but it can also be a source of unnecessary energy consumption. To create an eco-friendly nursery, opt for energy-efficient lighting options like natural light from outside and LED bulbs. These bulbs use less energy and last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs, which can save you money on your energy bill in the long run. Using sheer curtains or cord-free shades that still let in a bit of light can help with interior lighting (and ensuring baby gets ample daylight during the day can help with regulating their circadian rhythm if paired with dim lighting and blackout curtains at night).

3 things About Cloth Diapering You Need to Know

Have you ever thought about trying cloth diapers? I was determined to cloth diaper when I had my first baby and even tried a cloth diaper delivery service! But with little information and a high delivery bill, my time with cloth diapers didn't last very long. With my second kiddo, I had more information about the types of cloth diapers and how to clean them myself so I've learned a lot about cloth diapering and how to make it work for my family. Here are a few things about cloth diapering that I've learned over the years that you should know.

You don't need to be all-in

For some, cloth diapering comes easy, but for others —like me — it doesn't quite click that way. I really wanted to cloth diaper to save money on diapers and save the planet, so I let go of the notion that to be truly “crunchy” or a cloth-diapering mom, you need to do it 100%. Yes, you can cloth diaper at home, on the go, and even if you drop your baby off at daycare — it can be done 100%. But, there are also so many reasons parents are close to cloth diapering then decide not to because they think they need to be all in, and it doesn't have to be that way. You could even switch to cloth diapering just for swim time! Cloth diapering even just a little still saves you money and helps the planet, plus it might be a good way to avoid diaper rash.

cloth diapering and the wash

With my second, I knew I wasn't ready to use cloth diapers yet with all of the frequent blowouts of a newborn since adjusting to two kiddos was a rough transition for me. I waited a few months and started cloth diapering at night when I knew there'd only be pee in the diaper based on my baby's pee & poo patterns. When my son had regular bowel movements, I began to cloth diaper during the day, too. (I wasn't ready to do all the extra things you need to do for poop in a diaper.)

Tip: Avoid laundry detergents that are marketed as made-for-baby laundry detergents, they are not always safe! Instead, get a scent-free, dye-free, chlorine-free, phosphate-free option that works with your specific home water type (hard or soft) and washer machine.

With pee, you can simply throw the diapers in the wash as normal or add the diapers to your wash with the baby's other clothes! I made cloth-diapering work for my family based on when to use cloth diapers and at what ages/stages in development worked for us, and I'm glad I did. Now, instead of burning out and giving up on the idea of cloth diapering, I've been able to keep at it and am excited to cloth diaper again with our last baby coming in December!

folding diapers and sitting with River

You don't need special laundry detergent

As long as you're using a safe detergent, free of items that could cause buildup, you don't need to go searching for a specialty detergent. This is another thing that confuses a lot of new parents wanting to try cloth diapers . . . but it doesn't have to. In fact, you can use a laundry liquid that's free of dyes, chlorine, phosphates, and optical brighteners.

adding Tide purclean to cloth diaper wash

Everyone has a different cloth favorite

Similar to Cinderella's glass slipper or the story of Goldilocks, sometimes it takes a while to find the right cloth diaper for you and your baby. There are all-in-one cloth diapers, which are similar to a disposable diaper because you just need to grab it and put it on baby, but they can be bulky and some parents don't like the wash process. Then there are hybrids that use covers with disposable liners or reusable ones (called pre-folds) — these allow you to decide if you'd like to add a thick overnight liner or a thinner daytime one in the diaper. There are also pocket diapers— a hybrid between the two above with more lining in the cover and a slot for the additional liner you'd add for daytime or nighttime use.

It goes on and on with all-in-two diapers, flat diapers, sleeve diapers, etc. If you ask moms in a cloth diapering group to name their favorite diaper, chances are everyone will tell you something different about not only their favorite type of cloth diapers but also preferred brands for buying certain types. In the end, you really just need to test them yourself because each kiddo is different, and depending on your baby's age, a certain type of cloth diaper may work better than others. I bought a few all-in-one diapers at first and really liked them, but as my son got older I found that the hybrids worked better for us. About 80% of my cloth diapers are pre-folds and covers (or hybrids). One thing I would recommend is skipping microfiber and buying organic cotton only. This will reduce microplastics in the environment and be a safer option for your baby's skin.

5 Sanity Tips For Parents With Toddlers

Parenting toddlers is not for the weak, am I right? Those early years before kindergarten can be a nightmare for many parents and most toddler parents turn to the internet to look for parenting tips for toddlers. I know I was one of them! After having a few toddlers myself, I have learned a thing or two for saving your sanity while parenting toddlers. Here are five of my best sanity tips for parents with toddlers!

Toddlers Testing Your Sanity

Somewhere after their first birthday little ones change . . . into toddlers. Sometimes the change is gradual, where you may notice new skills or additions to her personality. But parents don't always get these warning signs and next thing you know your sweet cuddly baby has turned into an independent, physically demanding toddler. She's still your little girl, but now there's a whole new way to communicate with your toddler to avoid meltdowns, and she's more whiny and bossy than all about her parents and giving them hugs to say, “I love you.” Toddlerhood is stressful for both child and parent, but there are a few ways to navigate this time without having a meltdown of your own. Read through these handy tips and try them out. If you have more to add, comment below to share your own tips!

Sanity Tips for Parents with Toddlers

My best sanity saving tips for toddlers include:

  • don't yell or snap
  • do repeat and communicate
  • don't bribe
  • give choices
  • redirect

Let's dive deeper into these sanity tips for parents with toddlers.

1. Don't Yell or Snap

Whether you're saying that you're going to buy your daughter a unicorn or that you're disappointed in her and want her to stop whining, raising your voice has the same effect. Instead of hearing your message, your child is only hearing your tone, and your tone is telling her that you don't like her.

As your child, this is the most hurtful thing you could do. It breaks the trust kids should be able to have in their parents, that they'll always be there for them, and if you're a constant yeller it could lead to your child feeling like they're a failure and unwanted. Like you won't always be there for them. Instead if yelling, keep a calm voice and be sure that you are fully communicating with clear direction. Not only will this save your sanity as a parent of a toddler, but it will help your toddler feel heard and cared for.

As veteran communicators parents often don't realize how incomplete adult communication can be, especially to a little one still learning. Encourage your child to use her words, too, and reword that positive behavior with attention and listening.

2. Do Repeat and Communicate

In The Happiest Toddler on the Block, Dr. Harvey Karp shares that repeating what your child says to you before giving your answer lets her know that she's being heard (which will cut down on the repeating things 5 times to you phase, hopefully), and alerts her to listen to your communication for the answer. Talk about a great sanity saving tip for parents of toddlers!

If you just say, “I told you no,” it doesn't sound like you're really listening to her. He also suggests imitating your child when they whine or complain to get their attention (not to make fun of them) while repeating what they said before your response. This actually works!

3. Don't Bribe

It's been a long day and all you need is a minute without listening to whining or demands for several different things at the same time. So when your daughter whines that she wants lemonade just before bed you're at the point where you may either snap at her or just give in. There isn't a parent who hasn't been here and this is one of the things that hurts your sanity as a parent of toddlers. But this can turn into a more frequent way to communicate, where she whines and you use a bribe of some sort to pacify her so you can get things done.

Instead, try teaching patience by asking your child to be patient or do something while you're finishing your phone call or project. Let her know that when you're done she can have a reward for listening and being patient. A bribe is very different from a reward, so it's important to understand the distinction. Teaching patience will definitely help save your sanity as a parent of toddlers!

4. Give Choices

Toddlers are learning that they are a separate person from mom, with their own body. As they begin discovering what it means to be their own person (and this is a journey that will never end after this point), toddlers need a sense of independence and value. Rather than telling your child what to do or what to wear, offer two choices that you have picked out and let them choose between the two. This allows both of you to feel in control, and keeps the peace while saving your sanity. This little trick is one of the great sanity tips for parents with toddlers!

For situations where you can't offer two choices because you need to go somewhere but your child doesn't want to go, it's better to set the expectation in advance by preparing your child, “after school today we're stopping by the grocery store to get (insert important mommy item here). If you're good in the grocery store (don't expect perfect, but not running off or playing hide and seek would be ideal) we can either go to the park fro 10 minutes, or go home and have playtime together. What do you want to do after the grocery store later?”

By telling your child in advance what's happening you're treating her like an important and involved person and setting expectations for the day so that they aren't expecting to just go to the park and then find out they have to go to the grocery store instead. No one likes waiting for something to find out plans have changed. Rewarding your child for tough outings with kiddo time is also a great way to balance things out and will definitely save your sanity as a parent of toddlers!

5. Redirect

Toddlers have short attention spans at times, but they aren't stupid. If you are arguing with your child over which shirt to wear and then say, “Oh look, an airplane!” It isn't going to make things better. But, keeping your child's intelligence and interests in mind, distraction can be a very powerful tool for saving your sanity as a parent of toddlers.

Similar to yelling, saying “no” is best kept at a minimum until your child is older. You may remember this from the baby years, when saying a stern “no” or shouting “no!” as your baby crawls over to grandma's trinkets and then realize that you've made your curious baby cry by reacting in the wrong way. Keep a calm, steady voice, and move slowly (similar to when dealing with an easily upset animal) when approaching a child in a potentially dangerous situation. The faster you move and more you yell, the more panicked your child will be and could hurt themselves.

Instead of saying “no” all the time, show your child something they're interested in and redirect her. She can't hit the TV screen, but oh look, it's your favorite toy and it has new batteries in it! Kids learn what to touch on their own from this, so redirection is extremely helpful both around the house and out and about (especially the car where a ton of breakdowns happen) for saving your sanity. Keep music ready to start a dance party or act goofy to make your child laugh. If you sense the redirection isn't working try redirecting to something else.

I hope you found some good tips that will help save some of your sanity when it comes to raising your toddlers. If this list of sanity tips for parents with toddlers was helpful for you, I recommend checking out these posts:

Review: Jack N’ Jill Natural Toothpaste

Finding the right toothpaste for babies and toddlers is tough! Store shelves are lined with sparkly blue toothpaste filled with dye, chemicals, and unfamiliar colors. Jack N' Jill Natural Toothpaste (affiliate link) founders Rachel and Justin started selling fluoride-free toothpaste in Australia after searching for the right care for their own kids' teeth.

This post was originally published on Navigating Parenthood when we were “Savvy Every Day” back in 5/23/2014. This is not a sponsored post and does not contain medical/dental advice but it may contain affiliate links (at no cost to you).

When to use

Once baby's teeth start sprouting up, you've passed the point of cleaning baby's gums with a washcloth, and it's time to transition to a safe tooth cleaner. This is a hard step for parents because water is a known/safe substance to clean an infant's teeth while tooth gels are the great unknown. This is where Skin Deep's handy data and The Environmental Working Group's website come in. If you don't already know about searching EWG for safe products definitely look up the website. At EWG, you'll find safety ratings on commercial, natural, and organic products based on the ingredients inside. Jack N' Jill toothpaste has a 1-2 toxicity rating on the site, meaning it's fairly safe.

jackandjill4

Safe ingredients

Why does Jack & Jill toothpaste have a “fair” rating? They use natural ingredients instead of chemicals. The toothpaste is SLS-free, sugar-free, dye-free, fluoride-free, and free of preservatives. What's better than not having all those things in your little one's toothpaste? Having calendula in the toothpaste to soothe baby's gums (huge help when baby is teething). The company also created its products with the environment and your kids' future in mind — toothpaste containers are BPA-free and recyclable. Even the toothbrushes are compostable (brush handle) and biodegradable (brush head). Many people have heard to change toothbrushes every six months, or when the bristles start to warp, but Jack N' Jill recommends every 8 weeks and after an illness. They even tell you how to properly store the toothbrush and toothpaste!

Jack N' Jill toothbrushes and cups are the perfect size for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarteners. The toothpaste has Xylitol instead of fluoride, which is best for infants and babies (though there's debate among both parents and dentists about when to introduce fluoride), as well as little ones who still don't know how to spit yet. Dentists stand behind fluoride, and not all agree on the right age to start using a gel or toothpaste with fluoride in it, so I would see a few pediatric dentists and do your research on that. Personally, I waited on fluoride until my daughter was about 2 years old. After that, we went with a natural strawberry-flavored fluoride toothpaste since she was able to spit it out. Fluoride-free toothpaste like Jack N' Jill Natural Toothpaste is also great for older kids who can spit out toothpaste (like my daughter) who need to stay away from fluoride, or want to brush teeth between fluoride brushings.

jackandjillgel

Kid-approved

Since my daughter (S) is used to the strawberry toothpaste she's grown to love, when I had her try Jack N' Jill's raspberry flavor for the first time she didn't care for it. She just told me that she wants strawberry. She informed me that both kinds of toothpaste smell really good, but that she didn't want to brush with them. Jack N' Jill does make a strawberry-flavored toothpaste, but I dropped the ball and didn't get that one at the time of this review. (2021 update: My now 2.5-YO loves the strawberry version so much that she has run off with it and applies it to her toothbrush just to eat!)

I left the toothpaste and toothbrush out for a few days and noticed S gaining interest. She really likes the look of the packaging and loves the overnight case for the set. (As soon as we got everything in the mail, S wanted to hold her case, toothbrush, and toothpaste tubes in the car (and everywhere). She loves the kids on the front of the case and the little purple hippo on her toothbrush!) So after S eyed the toothpaste on the counter a bit more, I asked if she wanted to try the banana flavor. S let me try brushing her teeth with it then told me she wanted strawberry. Hmm.

The next day, I told her I wanted to take a picture of her holding her new toothbrush, and needed a photo of the brush with the toothpaste on it to show everyone that it was clear because it was dye-free. This got my preschooler involved — she was happy to help mommy. While posing for the picture S began brushing her teeth with the banana toothpaste (she loves getting to brush her teeth all by herself) and telling me how delicious it is. Aha! It's all about how you approach things with little ones.

toothbrush_cu

Since my daughter is a bit older, and I do already brush her teeth with fluoride, you may be wondering why I still wanted her to try Jack N' Jill Natural Toothpaste. We tried it to share with you, but also because S likes to brush her own teeth after I brush them, but I won't let her use her toothpaste because fluoride toothpaste twice a day (when I brush her teeth) is enough exposure for me personally (every parent is different). I like to have a fluoride-free toothpaste handy for S to use when she wants to practice brushing without my assistance so I know if she doesn't brush it all out properly it's still safe, and she isn't getting excessive amounts of fluoride. We also carry this fluoride-free toothpaste around during the day in case she needs to brush her teeth in the middle of the day after a sweet treat or snack that gets caught in the biting surfaces of her teeth.

Now, S uses the banana toothpaste (her favorite flavor, though I still like the raspberry) every time she gets to brush her teeth all by herself. If you have an infant, baby, toddler, preschooler, or even big kid, I recommend checking out Jack N' Jill for yourself.

P.S. How adorable are the Jack N' Jill Tooth Keepers for when your little one loses a tooth?!

Affirming words

Sometimes toddler adventures lead to learning through mistakes and navigating difficult feelings. “i am” was created by a local Bay Area mama to offer families positive affirmations they can read together to remind their littles that they are seen. Toddler gifts for outdoor adventures

wander & roam tot gift

Adventure mat

A soft vegan leather mat can help create a calming zone for adventurous tots to wind down and look at books or stretch and tumble. But the Wander & Roam vegan leather play mats also fold nicely to fit into any bag for trips to the beach, or a picnic at the park (or inside). If your tot likes to have tea parties, these mats would make a marvelous tablecloth, too!

Treasure collector

Every adventurous tot needs a basket to collect their nature treasures! Maisonette offers so many neat options from Olli Ella's collection of natural rattan baskets — choose from a house-shaped basket for trinkets and mini dolls to a basket that can attach to a scooter or bike but also function as a backpack or shoulder bag, or even a larger basket on wheels! Either way, you'll be glad you have one during your next berry-picking, flower-picking, rock-collecting, or general nature-finding adventure.

Hativity adventurous tot guide

Sun protection

Adventurous tots like to go out and explore! And though the Vitamin D is great for kids, the sun's rays can be especially harsh on the cloudy days of fall and winter so an SPF 50+ hat is a must. InspiraSpark's Hativity Kids Interactive Sunhat offers this sun protection plus a selection of beautiful patches to fit your child's favorite things (transportation, safari, sweet foods) or season (Spring is shown in the image). My hat-adverse kids were so excited to apply and trade patches for their hats so they could wear them (yay!).

klean kanteen guide

Drink regulator

Keep your toddler's drinks toasty warm (or nice and cold) for hours of outdoor play with Klean Kanteen's double-walled vacuum-sealed food-grade stainless steel bottle. It's easy to use and hold, and the twist-away straw is super fun.

Tips for Shopping for a Waterproof Raincoat

When it comes to shopping for a raincoat, you must make sure it is labeled WATERPROOF! What is the point of a raincoat that isn't waterproof? I am not sure but there sure seem to be a lot of raincoats out there for toddlers (and everyone else for that matter) that aren't actually waterproof but rather water resistant. Now, I don't know about you, but I don't want to be walking around in the rain with a toddler getting soaked and complaining about being wet! So waterproof toddler raincoats it is!

What Makes a Good Waterproof Raincoat

Okay, but what actually makes a good quality waterproof toddler raincoat?

Here are some things to look for when shopping for waterproof toddler raincoats:

  • first of all, look for the label of WATERPROOF and NOT water-resistant
  • look for sealed seams
  • make sure it has a quality attached hood
  • decide how insulated you want the jacket to be

Tips for Going Warm Jacket Shopping for Toddlers for Winter

It's already Fall and Winter is coming soon, so it's time to think about toddler coats and jackets! With families traveling for Thanksgiving and Christmas (and taking annual trips to the snow) trying on last year's coats and picking this year's fave is essential. There are a ton of different types of coats/jackets out there, so your choice really depends on the weather in your area and your toddler's preferences, but today we are focusing on insulated toddler jackets for cold climates!

My best advice when going shopping for a good insulated winter jacket for your toddler is to look for:

  • coats with hoods
  • a safe color for your activities
  • waterproofing level
  • the adjustability (will it grow with them throughout the season)
  • the type of insulation you want (does your child like a fleece lined coat?)

You can read more about tips for finding a good winter jacket for your child here.

What Makes a Good Insulated Winter Jacket for Toddler?

A good insulated jacket has two layers. An outer layer (soft or hard shell) and then an insulated inside layer that is attached to the jacket. There are a few different types of insulated toddler jackets, but the most popular one you'll find is a fleece-lined insulted toddler jacket. That is what most of today's list is comprised of!

I hope this list of insulated toddler jackets has helped you find one or two for your kids!

How to Potty Train Boys When They’re Ready

When it comes to potty training boys, my number one tip is to wait until they are ready to potty train to avoid a whole lot of problems. Worried about their age? Don't be. Every child will potty train in their own time and toddler boys are no exception. Learning how to potty train boys is something that takes some practice and skill. After teaching my son how to use the potty, I wanted to share my best tips for potty training boys right away!

potty training child on toilet

The Key to Potty Training Toddler Boys

The art of potty training isn't really art at all. There are a bunch of different methods out there, but some pretty key principles to keep in mind. Every child is different, so what works for one child doesn't always work for the next, which is why fantastic resources from other parents who have been there are so important. With that in mind, here is a little how-to guide for potty training boys!

How to Potty Train Boys

There are five key tips when learning how to potty train boys and they include:

  1. waiting for signs of readiness
  2. teaching him new tricks
  3. following his cues
  4. making it exciting
  5. helping him stay on track

We'll dive a bit deeper into each of these tips for potty training boys down below!

1. Wait For Signs of Readiness

Potty training boys should never be forced to always watch for signs of readiness, which include: interest in the potty, telling you he has to go potty, refusing to wear a diaper, and wanting big boy underpants. This post has tons of info on the ready signs for potty training along with some tips for learning how to potty train boys and girls!

2. Teach Him New Tricks

Without pushing the subject, offer information about potty training to your son. Buy books and videos about potty training. Buy a small child-sized potty (nothing fancy, just a basic one that he helps pick out), and place it near the toilet in a bathroom you most often use so that your child can sit on their potty while you sit on yours if he chooses to. Some boys sit on the potty to go pee and poo before they transition to standing to urinate, while others may skip that step and be more comfortable standing like dad likely does.

Keep in mind that just because he's a boy doesn't mean he'll necessarily potty train later than other kids (some boys potty train sooner than other kids). He also may be interested in the potty but then regress to the safety of diapers. It's normal and comes with potty training. Learning how to potty train boys via books or posts like this will reassure you of this!

3. Follow His Cues

If you notice your child is showing positive feelings toward potty training, and expressing interest in trying to use the potty, start having him try to go potty when you need to go. Watch for any cues he may have that signal he's about to go potty in his Pull-Up, and take him to the bathroom. Some parents like to also set a potty timer on their phone for the first week or two (trips to the potty every 30-45 minutes depending on your son's bladder control). This is a great step to potty training boys!

4. Make it Exciting

Create a potty training reward system with your child. Some parents use food as a reward, but I recommend choosing something that's more about time spent with you as a parent like a LEGO Duplo, tattoo, or toy car for each time he tries, and a whole set or trip to the movies if he goes potty for 5 days (doesn't need to be consecutive). A potty chart or potty app on your phone can help make potty training successful, too. Some apps offer games for kids to play after they've unlocked levels by using the potty. For boys, working on aim can be fun, too. Put some Cheerios in the potty for your child to aim into, or add a colorant to the toilet water so that the color changes after he goes potty.

5. Help Him Stay On Track

As a parent,  be mindful of the clothing you buy for your son now that he's in Pull-Ups and underwear — stick with two pieces (no more onesies, overalls, or jumpers for a while). Making sure your son's clothes support going potty (especially at the last minute) will save you on laundry.  Also keep a lookout for bathrooms whenever you go out of the house, in case you'll need to take your little one.

By the time you've accomplished steps 1-5 oh how to potty train above, you'll be well on your way to potty training your boy, but there's still more to do! Once he has daytime down, begin to teach him how to wipe himself. Most kids can't reach well enough to do a super job of wiping, but it creates independence and is important for when he goes to school and won't have help. (Interesting fact: I polled some moms and most said their child was nearly 6 years old before he or she could really wipe themselves well).

5 Misconceptions About Babywearing for New Moms

Life is full of misconceptions, and babywearing is no different. From telling you that you're going to drop your baby to say that it's strange that you're babywearing because it's something just for women, there are a lot of odd notions floating around . . . and this post is going to cover the big ones. Keep reading to learn about the common misconceptions about babywearing, and share this post with someone you think could use the information.

Some of the benefits of babywearing

People have a lot of opinions about babywearing, but if there's one thing I need to speak up about it's the truth about babywearing.

The truth? The truth is babywearing is a wonderful way to connect with your baby and offers many benefits, while many of the misconceptions about babywearing might say otherwise.

Some of the benefits of babywearing include:

  • Prevention of flat head syndrome
  • Can stabilize the baby's heart rate and body temperature
  • Offers freedom and convenience for caregivers
  • Can make breastfeeding in public easier

Among many other things. Click here to read more about the benefits of babywearing.

Common misconceptions about babywearing

The top five misconceptions about babywearing include:

  • Babywearing is only for babies
  • You're going to drop your baby
  • Babywearing is only for rich white women
  • Men don't babywear
  • You're spoiling your baby

Here is a bit more on the common misconceptions of babywearing.

1. babywearing is only for babies

False! This babywearing misconception couldn't be further from the truth. It should be called “baby and kiddo wearing,” really. Whether your baby was just born or is 5 years old, wearing your child is handy (just in different ways).

For the first year of life, babywearing gives parents a skin-to-skin bond with their little one and allows hands-free capabilities to get things done with a baby around who just wants to be held by you. As the kiddo gets older you may or may not use the stroller more, but when your child wants to be carried, or you're going on a trip where there's no room for a stroller a carrier or wrap can really save your back.

Have a sensory-sensitive child? Holding him tight in a wrap works as well as a pressurized blanket or shirt.

2. You're going to drop your baby

Like all baby products, there are risks when you babywear. But if you practice and follow the wrapping or carrier instructions in a safe environment at home as much as you can before taking it outside you should be fine.

As long as you're using the product properly, as it is meant to be used, and remain cautious and alert (as you should at all times with your little one anyway), it's safe. The chance of a child falling out of a carrier or wrap is about as likely as falling out of a stroller. It happens if the baby or child isn't properly secured within, or if the parent isn't paying attention and things get loose or not put on correctly (just as if you put too many bags on the stroller or hit a pothole).

3. Babywearing is only for rich white women

Historically, babywearing was used by people around the world to get things done. (Check out how it helps this mom of twins!) Women weren't always allowed maternity or parental leave after giving birth before going back to work … in fact, we aren't offered much leave now in the U.S.! Babywearing helps families to hold their littles close while still being able to get some things done. Though it seems like wraps and soft structured carriers are predominantly made by/for Caucasians, there are also some fabulous non-Caucasian businesses, too, and not everyone who owns a wrap or carrier is rich. There are also some simple DIY wraps you can make using tablecloth.

4. Men don't babywear

Yes, men do babywear! Babywearing offers the opportunity for dads to connect with their newborn if mom is the only one who can feed the baby, and also allows mom to get a break for a bit. Thanks to babywearing, dads are able to be more actively involved in the lives of their older babies and toddlers, too! Looking for examples? Check out these 6 men from all over the world who love wearing their kids.

5. You're spoiling your child

Babies and kids love to be close to their parents, so when parents respond in kind with loving words and support it benefits the child, it does not baby them. There are people who say that you're spoiling your baby and giving in by going to him when he cries, too, but we know that babies only cry to communicate basic needs. Holding the baby close, like when babywearing, is important to his development, and having the carrier handy for when your baby becomes a rambunctious toddler who runs up and down all the aisles of the store to destroy the shelves is also handy. This misconception about babywearing is one that could be saving many parents bits of sanity. Being worn in a baby or toddler carrier calms kiddos and gives a sense of security, it doesn't make them dependent.

What are some major misconceptions about babywearing that you've heard? Please share in the comments below!

  10. Slippers
hospital bag checklist for mom

Those ten things are necessary for your hospital bag. Some extras include phone chargers, your kindle, your favorite snacks, a nursing gown, your own pillow and blanket, and comfortable pj's. But in all honesty, you really do not need those things and you likely won't even be thinking about them when it comes to your birth and after-birth stay.

Here is a deeper dive into each of the items shared in my hospital bag checklist mentioned above.

1. Soothing Kit

Something like Earth Mama's Mama & Baby Collection kits offers things like a healing sitz bath, baby cleanser, perineal balm, and more. Everything to help you heal in postpartum and ensure the baby's skin is taken care of too. I just love this box as a gift and all the organic care items in it.

2. The Hospital Bag Itself

I bought a bag by Heidi Klum at Motherhood maternity and I just adored this bag (sadly don't have it anymore and can't find the image online). But here are a few other options you might love!

3. Music

I set up a Push Playlist and put it on my iPod (Yep, this was that long ago) for me to listen to at the hospital to take the focus off any pain and make it more fun. Yea, that didn't happen. There was even a point where I wanted everyone silent so I could focus. Now, I highly recommend Hypnobabies tracks. I've used them for my other births and they really helped me through contractions/waves and being more mindful in daily parenting life in general, too. Code hypno1528 saves you 15% off your order!

4. Push Dress

Instead of wearing an uncomfortable hospital gown, I wanted to wear something of my own while delivering so I bought a Pretty Pusher birthing gown. Once at the hospital, I changed into my Pretty Pusher and started labor. Since I was only 1 cm dilated but S' heart rate was over the top, the hospital induced me and broke my water. Going in, I planned on natural birth, but by about 9 cm I asked for an epidural because their breaking my water quickly like that was quite painful. They had me take off the Pretty Pusher and wear one of their gowns then because the slit in the back wasn't low enough (I think Pretty Pusher has made it lower since then). Side note: I regret getting the epidural because I was so close without it, and it made it hard for me to feel when to push on my own.

5. Baby Outfits

I wasn't entirely sure how much Savannah would weigh when she was born so I had a few newborn outfits picked out for her and kept in my hospital bag. When she was born I actually just kept her wrapped in the blankets until the hospital photographer came around for a picture, and discharge when I dressed her up to go home. For this hospital bag checklist, I would suggest bringing 2-3 outfits in different sizes!

6. Personal Care Items

This includes makeup (yep, I thought I'd be wearing that and have pretty birthing photos but it didn't happen), which I put on after my first shower the next day, a toothbrush & toothpaste, and all my shower items. I'm so glad I brought this stuff. Whether you think you'll shower at the hospital or not, bring it! A hairbrush and hair tie are also great choices that should be included in your hospital bag checklist.

7. Clothes For Discharge

I packed a change of clothes for me to wear the next day, too. Changing my clothes after a shower and finally being able to use the bathroom without complications (yea, I went there, TMI town), well, it was so nice. I was up late delivering Savannah, then all night just staring at her in awe once she was born, so the shower was necessary to wake up and get refreshed.

8.  The Birth Ball

So my birth ball (a stability/balance ball) didn't actually fit in the bag, because mine was already inflated, but I totally prepped for labor with workouts using The Birth Ball and bringing it to the hospital to work through contractions. I leaned over The Birth Ball when sitting in the hospital bed and when in a rocking chair in the room. I was on The Birth Ball most of the time and everything went very smoothly with it until the hospital staff told me I had to go into bed without it because they were breaking my water and wanted me to lie down. This was one of my favorites from this hospital bag checklist!

9. Birth Plan

Yea, I packed my birth plan because it is mentioned in every hospital bag checklist and immediately handed it to an RN (like she was going to read it), then I went into the hospital room and the “birth plan” was a thing of the past. What I learned from this is that birth is always different each time, and with each person. It can be very unpredictable so it's great to have a plan, but you need to understand that things will likely not go that way. Another bit of advice I have from that experience is to advocate for yourself. This is where a birth plan is handy. You can note down important things for you to remember.

Since I was in a hospital room I had to make sure whatever I did was within their rules, but it was also my birth, so I should have been more vocal (and brought more advocates) about what I wanted in my birth. I learned about doulas after having my daughter, and I kind of like the idea.

For useful birth plan examples, check out this post.

10. Slippers

The hospital gives you grip socks to walk around in after giving birth, and I recommend you use those instead of any other soft slippers or socks you might bring. I could barely walk after birth because of the epidural and would have slipped if I used my own non-grip slippers.

Here are some slipper options with grip to add to your hospital bag:

I hope this hospital bag checklist helps to give you a few ideas of what you may or may not need in your birthing bag. If you've already given birth, please share your did and didn't needs in the comments below!

The Pros and Cons of Bed Sharing

Co-sleeping is a hot, hot topic in the motherhood space and moms are either all for it, or totally against it. I am here today to share with you the pros and cons of bed-sharing along with my personal options on bed-sharing with your babies and toddlers.

The Truth About Bed Sharing

I'm not going to tell you to co-sleep, I know many people who are against it due to SIDS, and I tend to agree and disagree with that. I bought the expensive crib and organic mattress for my daughter, S, before she was born. It was all set up and ready, along with a bassinet for the first month or so depending on her weight and size (which ended up being huge but healthy due to her on-demand breastfeeding). But when I held S the first time I didn't want to let her go. I must have stayed up three days straight (like most new parents) because I couldn't bare to put her in the baby bed next to my hospital bed, or in her bassinet after that. Instead of sleeping when she was sleeping I gazed at her in amazement.

When we first went home I tried putting S in the bassinet but ended up falling asleep next to her while she breastfed, or picking her up because I was worried she would choke due to her reflux if she were flat on her back in the crib. Honestly, you have to be smart about co-sleeping. I knew for certain that I don't roll in my sleep, and I'm a very light sleeper when it comes to her making a sound. After she would fall asleep I would keep my arm under her for elevation and comfort, but scoot to give her space. But co-sleeping has worked for us and is definitely a great option for some families if you understand the pros and cons.

If you're struggling with making the decision to co-sleep or not co-sleep, think about if you feel the same as I did when my daughter was born, and consider the below pros and cons. If you have more to add please share them in the comments section below!

Pros and Cons of Bed Sharing

Below we are going to go into the pros and cons of bed-sharing for both babies and toddlers! I have included a list of my personal opinions inside of this collection of pros and cons for co-sleeping and I hope they help you decide whether or not bed-sharing with your babies and toddlers is for you or not!

Baby Co-Sleeping Pros

  • Easy breastfeeding in the middle of the night
  • Baby is within arm's reach
  • Bonds mom and baby more
  • More sleep for parents (less waking up and walking around the house)
  • Saves space for families who share one room or a small home/apartment
  • Saves money by skipping the crib
  • Fewer items to bring when traveling with a baby (no need for a portable crib!)
  • Beneficial skin-to-skin contact
  • Promotes breastfeeding

Baby Bed-Sharing Cons

  • Overnight vacations without the little one are non-existent
  • Less room in the bed for parents
  • There's a higher risk of SIDS or accidents if you're not careful
  • You have to sell the crib you bought before the baby was born
  • Not all relatives will be understanding

Toddler Co-Sleeping Pros

  • Builds a child's sense of security in a fast-changing world
  • Safely sleeping in the same room with parent(s) in case of emergency or home invasion
  • More sleep for everyone
  • Saves space for families who share one room or a small home/apartment
  • Saves money by skipping the crib or toddler bed (and eventually just going to a full-size bed)
  • Even if you don't co-sleep, little ones end up going to their parent's room in the middle of the night at times, so this isn't too different

Toddler Bed-Sharing Cons

  • By this age, parents may want the bed to themselves
  • Some children take longer to sleep alone after co-sleeping this length of time
  • Overnight vacations without the little one are non-existent
  • You need to sell any furniture already purchased for your toddler as a baby

Did this post teach you anything about bed-sharing with babies and toddlers? Did it open your eyes to the pros and cons? I hope so!

Not a fan of being Winnie the Pooh but love the stories? Instagram user, Kaylan, came up with the idea of being Kanga with Roo instead! “After all, my son was a little jumper. So I went online to look for ideas but I didn't like any of the costumes. I bought a cheap $15 dress from Forever 21 and some material from a craft store and made one myself. Cliche Pregger Costume

I think this must be the easiest clever pregnancy costume of all — Wear something comfy and bring along an empty carton of ice cream (maybe Three Twins if you're having twins) and a few pickles (I opted for a bag of pickle slices). After all, pregnant mamas want ice cream and pickles, right? Add some fluffy PJs and slippers, put your hair in a messy bun and this is gold. Photo by Sincerely, Me Photography.

Other Clever Pregnancy Costume Ideas

  • Preggo Brittany Spears: Dress up similar to her Oops I Did it Again or Oh Baby Baby music video if this is your second kiddo.
  • Gumball Machine: Grab some red felt and glue on some tiny pom pom balls.
  • Preggo Waitress: Inspired by the movie Waitress, this costume requires a mustard waitress dress (add a collar if it doesn't have one) and pie! Bonus points if you curl your hair.
  • Alison from Knocked Up: This one's best if you have a curly-haired guy to walk around with you. But the costume is pretty much just a green tank and jeans, or regular kinda clothes with a bun.
  • Angie from Baby Mama: Since Baby Mama was a comedy this costume requires going a bit over the top. Add pigtails, makeup, and a slushie drink of sorts.

3 Tips for Baby Proof Christmas Decorating

It's a tradition for my family to decorate the tree together just after Thanksgiving. I normally bring out a bin of ornaments we've used over the years as well as a few sentimental ones we've picked up since being married and having kids. But this year is a little different — we have a super inquisitive crawling baby — so we're using a few new tips I've found for baby proof Christmas decorating.

How to Baby Proof Your Christmas Decor

Baby proofing your Christmas decor is easier than you think! Stick to this rule: less is more! We'll get into it down below, but my best tip for baby proof Christmas decorating is keeping the tree (and other Christmas decor) as simple as possible. While it might look a bit barren to you, just think, you won't be chasing decor around the house all season long! Major win in my book.

3 Tips for Baby Proof Christmas Decorating

The best tips for baby proofing Christmas decor include:

  • trying out a different Christmas tree
  • keeping the tree simple
  • including your baby in the decorating

That last one might sound a bit off, but we'll get to that down below!

Here are my best tips for baby proof Christmas decorating!

1. Try a Different Christmas Tree

We opted for an artificial tree this year to save from the fallen pine mess and possible hazard. I'm a huge fan of real trees and miss the smell, but this 9-foot pre-lit tree of ours has made baby's first Christmas so much safer by making it easier to keep the area clean. There are even Upside Down Christmas Trees, that could work so you can easily baby proof your Christmas decor. Have you seen these? SO cool. This trendy tree style dates back to medieval Europe and is perfect for homes with curious tots and pets.

2. Keep the Tree Simple

Since we have a pre-lit tree there wasn't really much we needed to add to it when decorating so we kept our usual breakable ornaments in the Christmas decoration bin and just added a few new ones. My best tip for baby proof Christmas decorating: look for shatter-resistant ornaments or skip ornaments altogether the first year. If you do add them, be sure to leave the area within baby's reach free of ornaments. Pictures of babies holding ornaments are cute (see below), but it's a real danger if one drops near baby, or they find one and start chomping on it. Another way to keep it simple? Don't worry about covering the tree with ornaments! Ours is near a wall this year so I was able to put a minimal amount around the front and sides then leave the back bare.

If you're looking to go with some shatter-resistant ornaments, check these ones out!

3. Include Your Little One

Be sure to include your little one in the decorating process so that they understand the ornaments go on the tree and talk to them a little bit about why they go there. This can really help baby proof the Christmas decorating experience. Depending on their age it might not all sink in, but they're listening. S helped me decorate and I held the baby while putting up ornaments this year.

I hope these tips for baby proof Christmas decorating help you this holiday season!
